Open For Business. Writing, Editing, Research.

I am currently available for freelance writing, editing, and research jobs. I am quick and I offer a range of reasonable rates. I'm willing to travel, and happy to work from afar.

I write. I can do clear and concise, and I can do long and intricate. I can write letters you'd rather not write. I can write copy for advertising, websites, newsletters, pitches and press releases. I can write artist bios and statements, blog posts and articles. I'm quite good at FAQs.

I also edit. If you have existing content that needs to be reworked for consistency or tone, I can wrangle your messy notes into FINISHED. If you have a publication that needs a grammar wizard, I am that wizard.

I also research. If you need to investigate but you don't have the time, I will roll up my sleeves and dig into historical records, out-of-print library books and weird internet archives to find you information.

Here are some projects I've worked on.

This, Here — A pop-up design criticism blog made with Clifton Burt for Design Week Portland 2012.

Scout Book Case Study articles — Project highlights written for Scout Books. I also wrote copy throughout the site.

I attended a Design Writing and Research Intensive workshop as part of the Design Criticism MFA program at the School of Visual Arts in summer 2012. Here is some writing from that time.

I keep a blog for my students at Portland State University. Here is a sample post.

Being Graphic — A publication that I edited and contributed to, published to highlight Portland State University's graphic design program.

I also make art projects that incorporate a good deal of writing and/or research. You can see some examples here, here, here, here and here.

I also offer ghost writing but I can't show you examples because those projects are secrets! (Shh.)

These people have said nice things.

"Nicole helps me say things I didn't know that I knew. If I were able to read, I'd have Nicole Lavelle rewrite every book and article I was interested in."
Will Bryant, artist and funny man

"I always feel better about whatever I am writing once I have Nicole look it over. Her sharp eyes and excellent editing skills are powerful tools. I trust her to take my pile of jumbled thoughts and morph it into something that actually sounds smart and coherent. TWO BIG THUMBS UP FOR NICOLE!"
Kate Bingaman Burt, illustrator, designer, educator and creator of extraordinary energy

"Just so you know, I hire Nicole for ALL my writing and editing projects: books, editorial, academic writing, websites, design research, promotional work, as well as my love letters, Valentine's Day poems and editing down my to do lists. She has an awesome red magic marker. I love working with her. Seriously. She is brilliant. Hire her."
Lis Charman, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, Portland State

"If it weren't for Nicole I wouldn't know how to do anything."
Emma Barnett, Wieden+Kennedy

"I love to read Nicole's writing, which overflows with intelligence, curiosity, and warmth. Her work is compelling and honest and always feels deeply considered."
Taryn Cowart, Pinball Publishing and most excellent artist

"Writing? Aren't you a graphic designer? You always wrote. We always thought you were going to be a writer. Nicole Lavelle... looks good in print. We gave you a name for a byline."
